Biographical Sketch (Biosketch)

Definition

A structured CV alternative required in NIH and NSF grant applications that highlights an investigator's qualifications, expertise, and contributions relevant to the proposed project.

A biographical sketch — commonly called a biosketch — is a standardized document that replaces a traditional CV in federal grant applications. Unlike a full CV, a biosketch is limited to 5 pages (NIH) or 3 pages (NSF) and focuses specifically on the qualifications and experience relevant to the proposed project. NIH now requires biosketches to be generated through SciENcv (Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae), while NSF uses its own format. The biosketch helps reviewers assess whether the research team has the expertise to carry out the proposed work.

NIH Biosketch Format

NIH biosketches follow a specific format that emphasizes contributions to science rather than listing publications.

  • Personal Statement — A narrative (up to one page) describing your qualifications for this specific project
  • Positions, Scientific Appointments, and Honors — Chronological list of relevant positions
  • Contributions to Science — Up to 5 descriptions of significant contributions, each with up to 4 publications
  • Research Support and Funding — Ongoing and completed projects demonstrating relevant expertise
  • SciENcv — Must be generated through SciENcv and exported in the required format

NSF Biosketch Format

NSF uses a different format with a 3-page limit.

  • Professional Preparation — Undergraduate and graduate education, postdoctoral training
  • Appointments — Academic, professional, and institutional appointments
  • Products — Up to 5 most closely related and 5 other significant products (publications, datasets, software)
  • Synergistic Activities — Up to 5 activities demonstrating broader impacts (teaching, mentoring, outreach)

Tips for a Strong Biosketch

The biosketch is not a place for modesty — it is your argument for why you are the right person to lead this work.

  • Tailor the personal statement — Write a new personal statement for each proposal that connects your background to the specific project
  • Highlight relevant expertise — Emphasize the skills and experience that directly support your proposed aims
  • Choose publications strategically — Select publications that demonstrate your track record in the proposed area, not just your highest-impact papers
  • Show team fit — For multi-PI proposals, each biosketch should clarify that person's unique contribution to the team
