RAISE (Research Advanced by Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering) supports research that is genuinely interdisciplinary and does not fit within the scope of any single existing NSF program. Because the work spans multiple programs or directorates, RAISE proposals require concurrence from at least two NSF program officers before submission and are reviewed internally rather than through standard external peer review, unless the program officers choose to seek outside input. RAISE carries a larger budget cap and longer maximum duration than RAPID or EAGER, reflecting the greater scope of the interdisciplinary work it is meant to support.
RAISE is reserved for research that is bold and interdisciplinary enough that it cannot be accommodated by a single existing NSF program.
