Introducing Write with AI: A Real First Draft for Every Section of Your Proposal

TL;DR

Write with AI is a new button on every proposal section. On an empty section, it writes a complete first draft using your grant's agency, type, and requirements. On a section you've already started, it adds complementary new content instead of rewriting what you have. Everything is saved automatically and opens in the editor for you to review before you move on.

The blank page is the single biggest obstacle to finishing a grant proposal. You know your project, you know your organization, but staring at an empty "Specific Aims" or "Statement of Need" section with a word limit and a deadline is where momentum dies. We built Write with AI to solve exactly that problem. It's a new button inside every proposal section that generates a real first draft, written specifically for your grant's agency, mechanism, and requirements, in seconds. And if you've already started writing, it reads what you have and adds to it instead of starting over.

Where to Find It

Write with AI shows up in two places, depending on where you are in a section:
  • On an empty section: Open any section that hasn't been started yet and you'll see "Start Writing" next to a new "Write with AI" button.
  • On a section you're editing: Click "Edit Section" on a section you've already written, and a small GrantCopilot callout appears above the editor with an "Add with AI" button instead, so you can ask for more content without leaving the editor.
  • Both are available on any proposal, NIH, NSF, or nonprofit, as long as your account has AI access (including active free trials).

How It Actually Writes Your Section

Write with AI isn't a generic template generator. Every time you click it, GrantCopilot assembles the real context for that specific section before generating anything:
  • Your project details: Applicant/organization name, project title, and the description or requirements text tied to your proposal.
  • The specific section: The exact section title and description you're writing, so the draft stays scoped to that section only. It won't restate your whole project narrative or wander into content that belongs in a different section, like budget detail or evaluation methodology.
  • Your grant type: NIH mechanism (R01, R21, F31, and others), NSF proposal type, or nonprofit grant type (foundation, government, corporate, community). Each gets its own writing conventions baked in, NIH review criteria for NIH grants, PAPPG conventions for NSF, needs-statement and outcome-measurement conventions for nonprofit grants.
  • Your length limit: Whatever word or character limit is configured for that section is passed to the AI as a hard target, and a final safety check trims the result if it ever comes in over, so you're not stuck editing down an oversized draft.

Already Started Writing? It Builds on What You Have

This is the part we're most excited about. If a section already has content, whether you wrote it yourself or generated it earlier, clicking Add with AI doesn't throw it away and start over.
  • GrantCopilot reads what's already in the section and treats it as fixed. It's explicitly instructed not to rewrite, repeat, or summarize your existing text.
  • It then writes only new, complementary content: an additional supporting point, more detail, or a natural continuation, and appends it to what you already had.
  • The length budget adjusts automatically. If your section has a 500-word limit and you've already written 300 words, GrantCopilot knows it only has about 200 words of room left and writes to that, not the full 500.

Nothing Gets Lost

Because Write with AI can now add to content you're actively editing, we built it to save automatically at two points so you're never at risk of losing work:
  • Before it writes: Whatever's currently in the editor is saved first, so your existing text is locked in before the AI adds anything.
  • After it writes: The combined result (your original text plus the new addition) is saved again immediately.
  • The editor stays open on the combined draft so you can review, tweak, or keep writing. "Save Section" is still there if you want to use it, but by that point your work is already safe.

Copy with Formatting, Too

While we were in there, we also added a copy button to every section, available in both edit and view mode. It copies your section's text with formatting intact (bold, headings, lists), so pasting into Word, Google Docs, or an email keeps your structure instead of dumping plain text.

Try It on Your Next Proposal

Open any proposal in your workspace, expand a section, and look for the Write with AI button, either on a section you haven't started, or by clicking Edit Section on one you have. It's included with every active GrantCopilot account, including your free trial. As always, review what GrantCopilot drafts before you submit. It's built to give you a strong, agency-aware starting point, not to replace your judgment about what belongs in your proposal.

Write with AI is built around a simple idea: the hardest part of a grant proposal shouldn't be getting words on the page. Whether you're staring at a blank section or stuck partway through one, GrantCopilot can now give you a real, agency-specific draft to work from, and it knows the difference between writing a section from scratch and adding to one you've already started. Give it a try on your next section, and let us know what you think.
